The Mill’s History
The origins of The New Mill date back to the time of William I and the Domesday Book, which recorded two mills in this area. Part of the current structure is believed to have been built in 1577, following the destruction of the original mill by fire, hence the name ‘The New Mill’. For over 300 years, the mill was owned by the St Johns family and leased to the Spencers. A later tenant, Mr. Westcott, added the lock bridge and established a sawmill.
Local farmers would bring their grist to the mill, the corn grinding equipment and the waterwheel remain in place to this day, proudly displayed at the entrance.
In 1972, the mill was converted into a restaurant after significant renovations that extended the property. It became a popular wedding venue and earned a Michelin star for its cuisine.
However, after the restaurant’s closure in 2012, the building stood empty until 2021, when it was acquired by Kate Mahoney. By this time, the mill was in desperate need of renovation and care, but Kate was determined to restore it with respect for its unique history and character.
With a true passion for preserving the mill’s charm, Kate has overseen an extensive and sympathetic restoration, maintaining many original features while ensuring the property is fit for modern life. The work has been extensive, including major structural rebuilding, a new roof, doors and windows, along with updated electrics, plumbing, kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
In 2023, Kate and her family moved into the oldest part of the mill, making it their home. Renovations to the newer sections of the building are ongoing, with plans for completion in 2026.
In 2025, Kate launched New Moon Mill Ltd and began hosting events in the mill's stunning grounds. Once all renovations are completed, Kate plans to open a yoga studio, gym, treatment room and offer retreat accommodation available for hire.
